The chief of police is hereby authorized to designate as a "detective" any sworn member of the police department who has successfully completed the designated probationary period as a police officer of the department. The status of detective shall not be construed as an established rank within the department, and the chief is authorized to eliminate such designation and to reassign members when, in his discretion, the best interests of the village and law enforcement so require.
