No person lawfully in custody or confined in the city’s jail, before or after conviction for any violation of the ordinances of the city, or held in custody going to the city’s jail, or working upon the streets or other public grounds of the city or in custody of any officer of the city, shall break or attempt to break from such jail or custody and escape or attempt to escape therefrom.
