6-2-11: AUTHORIZED EMERGENCY VEHICLES:
   A.   Drivers Of Authorized Emergency Vehicles:
      1.   The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle, when on an emergency call, or when in the pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, or when responding to, but not upon returning from, a fire alarm, may exercise the privileges set forth in this Section, but subject to the conditions herein stated.
      2.   The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle may:
         a.   Park or stand, irrespective of the provisions of this Title;
         b.   Proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign, but only after slowing down as may be necessary for safe operation;
         c.   Exceed the maximum speed limits so long as he does not endanger life or property;
         d.   Disregard regulations governing direction of movement or turning in specified directions.
      3.   The exemptions herein granted to an authorized emergency vehicle, other than a police vehicle, shall apply only when the driver of any said vehicle, while in motion, sounds an audible signal by bell or siren, as may be reasonably necessary, and a visual signal, and when the vehicle is equipped with at least one lighted lamp displaying a red or other colored light visible under normal atmospheric conditions from a distance of five hundred feet (500') to the front of such vehicle. Oscillating, rotating or flashing lights located on top of police vehicles, in this state, shall be lighted whenever a police officer is in pursuit of a violator of a traffic law or regulation.
      4.   The foregoing provisions shall not relieve the driver of an authorized emergency vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the highway. (1972 Code § 71.035)
   B.   Operation Of Vehicles On Approach Of Authorized Emergency Vehicles: Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle making use of audible and visible signals meeting the requirements of the laws of this state, or of a police vehicle properly and lawfully making use of an audible and visual signal, the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right of way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the right hand edge or curb of the roadway clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer; provided, however, the driver of every other vehicle on a one-way street shall drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the nearest edge or curb of the roadway, clear of any intersection.
