§ 72.55 SIGNS INDICATING QUIET ZONES.
   Whenever authorized signs are placed or installed indicating a zone of quiet, no person operating any vehicle within the zone shall sound the horn or other warning device of the vehicle, except in an emergency. A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.

§ 72.56 ESTABLISHMENT OF PLAY STREETS.
   The City Council may declare any street or part thereof a play street and shall place appropriate signs or devices in the roadway. Whenever authorized signs are erected indicating any street or part thereof as a play street, barricades are placed, and the street is closed to all traffic; no person shall drive a vehicle on the street or portion thereof except drivers of vehicles having business or whose residences are within the closed area, and then any driver shall exercise the greatest care in driving on the street or portion thereof. A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.

§ 72.57 UNMUFFLED ENGINE COMPRESSION BRAKES.
   (A)   Definitions. For the purposes of this section, the following definition shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
      “UNMUFFLED ENGINE COMPRESSION BRAKE.” A motor vehicle brake which is activated or worked by the compression of the engine of a motor vehicle, and which is not effectively muffled to prevent excessive noise.
   (B)   Prohibition.
      (1)   No person shall use an engine braking system within the corporate limits of the City of Albemarle which is in any way activated or operated by the compression of the engine of any such motor vehicle or any such unit or part thereof, except in cases of emergency or necessary for the protection of persons and/or property. Such braking is commonly referred to as compression braking or a “jake brake.”
      (2)   The City of Albemarle will identify the areas in which engine braking is prohibited and signs shall be conspicuously posted in such areas stating: “No engine braking” or its equivalent.
   (C)   Emergency vehicle exemption. All emergency vehicles are exempt from this order.

TURNING MOVEMENTS
§ 72.65 REQUIRED POSITION AND METHOD OF TURNING AT INTERSECTIONS.
   The driver of a vehicle intending to turn at an intersection shall do so as follows.
   (A)   Right turns. Both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
   (B)   Left turns on two-way roadways. At any intersection where traffic is permitted to move in both directions on each roadway entering the intersection, an approach for a left turn shall be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the center line thereof and by passing to the right of the center line where it enters the intersection. After entering the intersection the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the center line of the roadway being entered. All vehicles shall pass beyond the center of the intersection before attempting a left turn.
   (C)   Left turns on other than two-way roadways. At any intersection where traffic is restricted to one direction on one or more of the roadways, the driver of a vehicle intending to turn left at the intersection shall approach the intersection in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in that direction on the roadway being entered.
   (D)   A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.

§ 72.66 TURNING MARKERS.
   When authorized markers, buttons, or other indicators are placed within an intersection indicating the course to be traveled by vehicles turning thereat, no driver of a vehicle shall disobey the directions of the indicators. A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.

§ 72.67 AUTHORITY TO PLACE RESTRICTED TURN SIGNS.
   The City Council shall determine those intersections at which drivers of vehicles shall not make a right, left, or U-turn and shall place proper signs at the intersections. The making of the turns may be prohibited between certain hours of any day and permitted at other hours, in which event it shall be plainly indicated on the signs or they may be removed when the turns are permitted. When signs are so placed, it shall be unlawful to make a turning movement in violation thereof at the intersections described in Traffic Schedules XV, XVI, XVII, and XVIII, hereby incorporated herein.

§ 72.68 OBEDIENCE TO NO-TURN SIGNS.
   Whenever authorized signs are erected indicating that no right, left, or U-turn is permitted, no driver of a vehicle shall disobey the directions of any sign. A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.

§ 72.69 LIMITATIONS ON TURNING AROUND.
   The driver of any vehicle shall not turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction on any street in a business district, and shall not on any other street so turn a vehicle unless the movement can be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic. A violation of this section is punishable as a misdemeanor.
