§ 93.26 DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this subchapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   BATTERY BACKUP. In addition to the required AC primary power source, required smoke detectors in occupancies in BOCA Use Group R-2, R-3 and I-1 shall receive power from a chemical battery when the AC primary power source is interrupted. (BOCA)
   BATTERY OPERATED. Not permanently connected to 110 volt building wiring, but powered by one or more chemical batteries.
   DUPLEX. A building containing two separate living units.
   HARD-WIRED. Must be permanently connected to 110 volt building wiring, equipped with battery backup; provided, however, that battery backup shall not be required for smoke detectors in buildings equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with BOCA Sections 906.2.1, 906.2.2 or 906.2.3.
   INTERCONNECTION. Where more than one detector is required to be installed within an individual dwelling unit in an occupancy in Use Group R-2 or R-3, or within an individual guestroom or suite in an occupancy in Use Group R-1, the detectors shall be interconnected in such a manner that the actuation of one alarm will actuate all of the alarms in the individual unit.    MULTI-FAMILY DWELLING. A building or portion thereof containing more than three living units, and not classified as a duplex.
   SINGLE-FAMILY DWELLING. A building containing one living unit.
   SMOKE DETECTOR. A UL listed and approved device designed and capable of sensing visible particles of smoke or other products of combustion.
