(A) Per § 506.1 of the North Carolina Fire Code, the City Fire Department requires the following types of structures to have a key lock box system:
(1) Commercial or industrial structures protected by an automatic alarm system or automatic suppression system, or such structure that are secured in a manner that restricts access during an emergency;
(2) All multi-family residential structures; and
(3) Governmental structures and nursing care facilities.
(B) All newly constructed and renovated structures from January 1, 2011 will be subject to this section, and shall have the key lock box installed and operational prior to the issuance of the occupancy permit. All structures in existence on the effective date of this section will be requested to comply with this section to have a key box installed and operational. All buildings with a high life safety will be required to have a key box installed.
(C) The Fire Chief shall designate the type of key lock box system to be implemented within the zoning of the city, and shall have the authority to require all structures to use the designated system.
(D) The owner or operator of the structure, business, facilities required to have a key box shall, at all times, keep the proper keys in the lock box that will allow access to the structure and fire control systems or rooms.
(E) The Fire Chief shall be authorized to implement rules and regulations for the use of the lock box system.
