§ 41.028 FIRE DEPARTMENT ACCESS TO FIRE EQUIPMENT.
   (A)   Identification.
      (1)   Fire protection equipment shall be identified in an approved manner. Rooms containing controls for HVAC systems, sprinkler risers and valves, or other fire detection, suppression or control elements shall be identified for the use of the Fire Department. Approved signs are required to identify fire protection equipment and equipment location. Signs shall be constructed of durable materials, permanently installed and readily visible. Their location must be clearly identified with written or pictographic signs, which must be clearly visible and legible. For exterior signs, heavy-gage, sign-gage aluminum is recommended. Interior signs may be constructed of plastic.
      (2)   The manner of identification is subject to the approval of the Fire Code Official.
   (B)   Location. With respect to hydrants, driveways, buildings and landscaping, Fire Department connections shall be located that the fire apparatus and hose connections to supply the system will not obstruct access to the buildings for other fire apparatus. The location of the Fire Department connections shall be approved.
   (C)   Visible location. Fire Department connections shall be located on the street side of the buildings, fully visible and recognizable from the street or nearest point of the Fire Department vehicle access or as otherwise approved by the Fire Code Official. A three-foot clearance in all directions must be maintained around the Fire Department connection.
   (D)   Signs. The Fire Department connection shall be indicated by an approved sign mounted on the street front or on the side of the building. Such sign shall have the letters “FDC” at least six inches (152 mm.) high and words in letters at least two inches (51 mm.) high or an arrow to indicate the location. A metal sign with raised letters at least one inch (25 mm.) in size shall be mounted on all Fire Department connections serving automatic sprinklers, standpipes or fire pumps connections. Such signs shall read: AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS, STANDPIPES OR TEST CONNECTIONS, or a combination thereof as applicable. All such signs shall be subject to the approval of the Fire Code Official.
