1745.05 EXCEPTIONS TO RESTRICTIONS ON CONSTRUCTION IN FIRE ZONES.
   Permitted exceptions, subject to the specified limitation, to the above restrictions are as follows:
   (a)    Changes, alterations and repairs to the interior of existing buildings or to the front facing a public street may be made, provided such changes do not increase the fire hazard, change the occupancy to a class of occupancy otherwise prohibited, nor increase the height of the building.
   (b)    Wood or other combustible veneers on noncombustible backing for show windows that do not extend above the first full story above grade.
   (c)    Buildings of unprotected noncombustible construction not exceeding 400 square feet in area in Fire Zone No. 1, and 1,500 square feet in area in Fire Zone No. 2, except when used for a high hazard occupancy, not more than one story in height, and having a horizontal separation of not less than ten feet on all sides.
   (d)    Enclosed and open-air parking garages complying with the BOCA Basic/ National Building Code of unprotected noncombustible construction.
   (e)    Builder's shanties of wood or other construction, for use only in connection with a duly authorized building operation and located on the same lot with such building operation, on a lot immediately adjoining, on an upper floor of the building under construction, or on a sidewalk shed.
   (f)    Piazzas or balconies of unprotected noncombustible construction on dwellings, not exceeding ten feet in width nor extending more than three feet above the second-story floor beams; provided that no such structure shall be located nearer then three feet to an adjoining lot line or be joined to a similar structure of another building.
   (g)    Fences of unprotected noncombustible construction, not exceeding ten feet in height.
   (h)    Display signs as-provided in Article 1757 hereof.
   (i)    Cooling towers as provided in the BOCA Basic/National Building Code.
   (j)    Roofs over parking lots and bus stations, of unprotected noncombustibe construction, where the roof is at least ten feet above the floor, and every forty feet there is an open roof ventilation area six feet wide extending either the full length of the roof or the full width of the roof.
   (k)    Temporary buildings and other miscellaneous structures conforming to the requirements of this Building Code, sheds, canopies or fences for the protection of the public, may be erected in Fire Zone No. 1 and Fire Zone No. 2, by special permit for a limited period of time, and such structures shall be completely removed at the end of that period. Such buildings shall be considered as exceptions to the provisions of this article, and shall require the approval of the Building Inspector.
