(A) The Fire Chief or the Fire Marshal shall require a key box be installed in an approved location(s) on any new Class 1 structure that is protected by an automatic sprinkler system equipped with a local or transmitted waterflow alarm, or the building is provided with any fire alarm system equipped with an outside audible/visual signaling device, or the building is provided with any fire alarm system where the alarm is transmitted to an off-site location or to the fire alarm center for the servicing Fire Department, or an area on that property is unduly difficult because of secure openings and where immediate access is necessary for lifesaving or firefighting purposes for property preservation.
(B) All key boxes shall be purchased from Knox Box Corporation and keyed to the city’s Fire Department.
(1) The key box shall contain:
(a) Keys to locked points of ingress whether on the interior or exterior of such buildings;
(b) Keys to locked mechanical equipment rooms;
(c) Keys to locked electrical rooms;
(d) Keys to elevator controls;
(e) Keys to other areas as directed by the fire official;
(f) Keys to post indicator valves controlling the water supply for fire sprinkler systems; and
(g) Fire alarm control panels.
(2) The emergency key box shall be installed on the building no more than three feet to the side of the main building entrance and approximately five feet above grade. Alternate locations shall be approved by the Fire Chief or Fire Marshal. The red reflective, Knox Co. sticker shall be affixed in the upper corner of the main entrance door on the side leading to the key box.
