(a) In single-family and two-family dwellings, a smoke detector shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the dwelling unit, including basements, but excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
(b) In multifamily dwellings, rooming houses and apartment houses, smoke detectors shall be installed within each dwelling unit as follows:
(1) Outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms;
(2) In each common stairwell at the highest habitable level; and
(3) In each hallway on every floor, to be spaced at intervals of no less than fifty feet.
(c) In family living units with one or more split levels (levels with less than one full story separation between levels), a smoke detector required by subsection (a) hereof shall suffice for an adjacent lower level, including basements. However, where there is an intervening door between one level and the adjacent lower level, a smoke detector shall be installed on the lower level.
