1464.01 DEFINITIONS.
   As used in this chapter:
   (a)   "Apartment house" means any building which is occupied as a home or residence by three or more families or persons living independently of each other and doing their own cooking in the building. Apartment house includes a building containing three or more apartments.
   (b)   "Approved carbon monoxide detector" means any carbon monoxide detector that meets the requirements and approval of the Underwriters' Laboratories Standard.
   (c)   "Common stairwell" means a vertical shaft in a building containing one or more flights of stairs and the necessary landings connecting such stairs, to which stairs the general public has free access. A flight of stairs, for the purposes of this chapter, shall have at least three risers.
   (d)   "Dwelling" means any building which is not an apartment house, lodging house, hotel or mobile home and which contains one or two dwelling units which are, or which are intended or designed to be, occupied for living purposes.
   (e)   "Dwelling unit" means a single unit providing complete, independent living facilities for one or more persons, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation, or a single unit used by one or more persons for sleeping and sanitation pursuant to a work practice or labor agreement.
   (f)   "Habitable room" means every room or enclosed floor space used or intended to be used for living, sleeping, cooking or eating purposes, excluding rooms containing toilets, bathtubs or showers and excluding laundries, pantries, foyers, communicating corridors, closets and storage spaces.
   (g)   "Remodeling" means the alteration or reconstruction of an existing building for which a building permit is required to be obtained by the County or the Village.
   (h)   "Rooming house" means every dwelling or part thereof which contains one or more rooming units in which space is sublet for compensation by the owner or operator to two or more persons not within the second degree of kinship to the person compensated. Boarding houses, hotels, inns, lodging homes, dormitories and other similar dwelling places are included, except and to the extent that they are governed by stricter standards elsewhere established by law.
   (i)   "Rooming unit" means a room or group of rooms let to an individual or household for use as living and sleeping quarters, but not for cooking, whether or not common facilities for cooking are made available.
   (j)   "Separate sleeping area" means the area of a dwelling in which the bedrooms are located. Bedrooms separated by other use areas, such as kitchens or living rooms (but not bathrooms), shall be considered as separate sleeping areas for the purposes of this chapter.
   (k)   "Story" means that portion of a building included between the upper surface of a floor and the upper surface of the floor or roof next above it.
