§ 154.500 STATEMENT OF INTENT; EXTENSION OR ENLARGEMENT OF USES.
   (A)   Statement of intent.
      (1)   Within the districts established by these zoning regulations or amendments that may be adopted later, there may exist lots, structures and uses of land and structures that were lawful before these zoning regulations were passed or amended but would be prohibited, regulated or restricted under the terms of these zoning regulations or future amendment.
      (2)   It is the intent of these zoning regulations to permit these nonconformities to continue until they are removed or discontinued, but not to encourage their continuance.
      (3)   Such uses are declared by these zoning regulations to be incompatible with permitted uses in the districts involved. It is further the intent of these zoning regulations that nonconformities shall not be enlarged upon, expanded or extended, nor be used as grounds for adding other structures or uses prohibited elsewhere in the district except by appeal to the Village Planning Commission for approval of specific plans.
   (B)   Extension or enlargement of uses. A nonconforming use of a structure or land, or a structure and land, shall not be extended or enlarged after passage of these zoning regulations by attachment on a building or premises of additional signs intended to be seen from off the premises, or by the addition of other uses of a nature that would be prohibited generally in the district involved.
