§ 154.536 DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   BULLETIN BOARD SIGN. A sign displaying announcements that direct attention to the public, charitable or religious facility and which is located on the lot of such facility.
   BUSINESS SIGN. A sign directing attention to a business, product, service, or activity conducted or sold on the lot where the sign is displayed.
   CANOPY SIGN. A sign directing attention to a business, product, service, or activity conducted or sold on the lot where the sign is displayed.
   CONSTRUCTION SIGN. A sign directing attention to construction upon property where the sign is displayed, and bearing the name, address, sub-lot number or other identifier of the contractor.
   DIRECTIONAL SIGN. A sign intending to direct the safe flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, including “enter”, “exit” and “arrow” signs.
   FLASHING SIGN. Any illuminated sign that exhibits changing light or color effects.
   FRONT STREET SIGN. The edge of the pavement along the front of property.
   GROUND SATELLITE STATION. Any antenna or earth station designed, constructed, or modified to bring in or receive satellite television signals.
   GROUND SIGN. A free-standing sign not permanently anchored or secured either to a building or the ground, such as, but limited to, the “A-frame”, “T-shaped” or inverted “T-shaped” sign structures, and truck, trailer or vehicle-mounted signs.
   HEIGHT OF A SIGN. The measurement from the ground elevation immediately below the sign to the highest point on the sign or supporting frame.
   IDENTIFICATION SIGN. A sign, other than a nameplate sign, indicating the name, address and activity occupying the building store, service or establishment.
   ILLUMINATED SIGN. A sign that has characters, letters, figures, designs or an outline illuminated by electric lights or luminous tubes as a part of the sign proper, or that is illuminated by the reflector method.
   INFORMATIONAL SIGN. A sign conveying a message relative to a danger or hazard existing on the property, or indicating a condition on the property that requires the exercise of ordinary due care, or providing public safety information, or other public information, such as “Beware of Dog”, “Children at Play”, “Helping Hand”, “Gold Star” and “Blue Star” signs.
   MARQUEE. A permanent roofed structure attached to and supported by the building and projecting beyond the building line or over public property.
   MARQUEE SIGN. A sign attached to or constructed in a marquee.
   MEMORIAL SIGN. A sign designed, intended or used to preserve the memory of a person, place or event, including landmark plaques and historical places.
   NAMEPLATE SIGN. A sign indicating the name, address, and profession of the person or persons residing on the premises, or legally occupying the premises, or indicating a home occupation legally existing on the premises in a residential district structure.
   PERMANENT SIGN. A sign designed or intended to be used indefinitely without change in the same state or place, and includes nameplate signs, directional signs, business signs, bulletin board signs, illuminated signs, identification signs, informational signs, project signs and memorial signs.
   POLE SIGN. A sign supported by one or more poles, posts or braces on or in the ground.
   POLITICAL SIGN. A sign urging the passage or defeat of any candidate seeking any political office or urging the passage or defeat of any ballot measure to be voted upon by the public.
   PROJECTION SIGN. A sign, other than a wall sign, erected on the outside wall of a building, which projects out at a 90 degree angle therefrom.
   REAL ESTATE SIGN. A sign announcing the sale, rental or lease of the lot where the sign is displayed, or announcing the sale, rental, or lease of one or more structures, or a portion thereof, located on such lot, and indicating the owner, realty agent, telephone number, or “open house” information.
   RESIDENTIAL AREA. The R-1A, R-1B, R-2, R-3 and PD-1 Districts.
   REVOLVING SIGN. A sign that revolves 360 degrees, but does not exceed eight revolutions per minute.
   ROOF SIGN. A sign erected upon or above a roof or parapet wall of a building, which sign is wholly or partially supported by such building.
   SECURITY SIGN. A sign indicating that the property is protected by a security surveillance system of any nature.
   SIGN. Any display, figure, painting, drawing, placard, poster or other device placed on the ground or on any tree, wall, bush, rock, post, fence, building, structure or object whatsoever, which is designed, intended or used to convey a message, advertise, inform or direct attention to a person, institution, organization, activity, place, object, or product. PLACED, as used in this definition, includes erecting, constructing, posting, painting, printing, tacking, nailing, gluing, sticking, carving, or other fastening, affixing, or making visible in any manner whatsoever.
   SIGN STRUCTURE. Any structure that supports or is capable of supporting any sign as defined in this chapter. A SIGN STRUCTURE may be a single pole or may, or may not be, an integral part of the building.
   TEMPORARY ADVERTISING SIGN. A sign announcing or advertising special events or sales.
   TIME AND TEMPERATURE DISPLAY. A cabinet containing illuminated numerals flashing alternatively to show the time and temperature.
   TOTAL AREA OF A SIGN.
      (1)   The entire area within a sign’s continuous perimeter enclosing the extreme limits of such sign, including all background area figures and letters.
      (2)   Such perimeter shall not include any structural elements lying outside of the sign limits that are not an integral part of the information or visual attraction.
         (a)   For computing the area of a wall sign that consists of letters or figures attached to a wall surface, the sign area shall be within a single continuous perimeter enclosing only such letters and figures, if the background wall surface is not changed, painted, or designed to form a distinct or contrasting background surface in relation to the remaining wall surface.
         (b)   In computing two-sided signs, the combined area of both faces shall be used for the total sign area.
   WALL OR PANEL SIGN. A sign integral with the exterior wall of a building, attached to the wall or parallel with the wall.
   WINDOW SIGN. A sign painted, attached or affixed to the interior or exterior surface of windows or doors of a building.
