The mayor, with the advice and consent of the council, shall appoint a chief of police and such other police officers as they deem necessary, and said officers shall hold such positions from the time of entering upon their duties until the first Monday in May following the time of their several appointments, and until their successors are appointed and qualified, unless sooner removed by the mayor with the approval of the council.
