§ 34.33  REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION OF AUXILIARY OFFICERS.
   (A)   Generally. Any person may request and submit an application for the position of auxiliary officer. This position is an entry level position within the Police Department and is designed to introduce a candidate to law enforcement. Should a candidate decide to continue in law enforcement, he or she can attend and complete a basic training course. Upon certification by the State of Ohio, the officer may then advance to the reserve officer ranks.
   (B)   Auxiliary patrol officer requirements.
      (1)   Age: minimum of 20 years of age;
      (2)   Vision: 20/100 vision correctable to 20/20 at the time of appointment and cannot be colorblind;
      (3)   Hearing: no hearing loss exceeding 30 decibels, nor hearing aids;
      (4)   Education: minimum of a high school graduate or G.E.D.; and
      (5)   A candidate who fails to meet the minimum requirements will be rejected until the candidate has taken remedial action to correct the defect.
   (C)   Auxiliary officer selection process.
      (1)   When a vacancy exists within the Auxiliary Officer Program, applications will be selected and activated. Generally, applications will be selected based on the date of application. However, should a candidate possess the skills that are advantageous to the Police Department, that candidate’s application shall take precedence.
      (2)   The steps outlined for the selection process are:
         (a)   Background investigation;
         (b)   Authorization for evaluation (ride-along program);
         (c)   Interview with the Review Board; and
         (d)   Recommendation to the Chief of Police.
      (3)   A candidate may be rejected at any step of the selection process. The selection process should take no longer than 90 days to complete. If the process is extended, the candidate will be notified.
      (4)   Candidates accepted as auxiliary officers are expected (not required) to complete a basic training academy within 18 months from the date of acceptance unless the candidate specifies his or her intention to remain as an auxiliary officer when accepted into the Auxiliary Program. An auxiliary officer will serve a probationary period of one year.
