6-1-5: DEPARTMENTAL POSITIONS: DEPUTY CHIEF OF POLICE: CORPORAL:
   A.   Deputy Chief of Police: There is hereby established the position of Deputy Chief of the Police Department. The Deputy Chief is an exempt rank immediately below that of the Chief of Police. The Deputy Chief shall be appointed by the Chief of Police, subject to the approval of the City Council, from any full-time member of the Police Department holding the rank of sergeant or above. The Deputy Chief shall serve at the discretion of the Chief of Police and may be suspended or removed from the position at the discretion of the Chief of Police, subject to the approval of the City Council. The Deputy Chief shall be considered on furlough from the rank held prior to the appointment and will revert to his prior rank upon resignation or discharge as Deputy Chief.
   The Deputy Chief shall be second in command of the Police Department and shall have the duties and responsibilities as prescribed by the Chief of Police. In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chief shall be charged with the general oversight of the activities of the Police Department and shall be the direct supervisor over the captain, lieutenant, sergeants, and other members.
   B.   Corporal: There is hereby established the position of Corporal. The Corporal shall be appointed by the Chief of Police from the rank of patrol officer, subject to the approval of the City Council. The Corporal will serve at the discretion of the Chief of Police and may be suspended or removed from the position at the discretion of the Chief of Police. A Corporal shall be the ranking officer in the absence of a sergeant or other supervisory officer.
