(A) (1) A satisfactory disinfecting solution may be prepared by using household bleach such as Clorox, Purex, and the like. One gallon of household bleach is usually adequate for the average well. Mix the bleach with three to four gallons of water and pour into the well.
(2) Chlorine powder such a B.K. powder or HTH may also be used. For safety reasons, these products must be used with caution.
(B) Connect a garden hose to an outside faucet and run water into the well until a chlorine odor can be detected. This circulation aids in the well and distribution system.
(C) Open cold water faucets in the house until a chlorine odor can de detected, close faucets.
(D) Allow the chlorine to remain in the well for 12 or more hours.
(E) (1) Connect a garden hose to an outside faucet and pump off water until no chlorine odor or taste can be detected.
(2) Keep the discharge out of the septic tank or septic tank drain line area.
(F) Have a sample collected by the local Health Department for bacteriological analysis after chlorine has been removed from well and household system.
(G) Precaution must be taken when pumping off water to prevent pumping well dry and possibly burning up pump.
