(a) The City Building Official/Codes Enforcement Officer is hereby authorized to prescribe the proper type, usage, placement and location of backflow prevention devices and to require the installation of the devices as determined for all plumbing installations or modifications of existing plumbing systems for which a city plumbing permit is required. Examples of installations requiring backflow prevention devices shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
(1) Refrigerating unit condensers and cooling jackets. Except when potable water provided for a refrigerator condenser or cooling jacket is entirely outside the piping or tank containing a toxic refrigerant, the inlet connection shall be provided with an approved backflow preventer. Heat exchangers used to heat water for potable purposes shall be of the double wall type;
(2) All new yard sprinkler systems for which a plumbing permit may be required;
(3) Sill cocks; and
(4) Boilers.
(b) The City Building Official/Code Enforcement Officer is hereby authorized to prescribe the proper maintenance and overhaul of backflow prevention devices already in service, in accordance with the age and condition of the device, and the manufacturer’s instruction. Overhaul intervals should not exceed eight years.
