§ 153.02  STREET ADDRESS SYSTEM.
   (A)   Establishment of grid system.
      (1)   Establishment. Main Street (U.S. 311) and a perpendicular line at the intersection of Depot Street and Main Street (known hereafter as the Depot Street line) are the base lines used in numbering a street in a north/south or east/west direction. Streets running north and south from the Depot Street line shall be numbered starting with the 100 block. Streets running east and west from Main Street and U.S. 311 shall be numbered starting with the 100 block. Refer to Figure 1: Walnut Cove Grid Map.

      (2)   Exception. Certain major roads shall maintain the county address system to maintain consistency until the town deems it feasible to adopt the town’s address system for these roads. The roads in the town that shall be assigned address numbers on the county system are N.C. 65 west from U.S. 311 (Main Street), N.C. 89, U.S. 311 beyond the N.C. 89 split, Fowler Road and Martin Luther King Drive. Furthermore, Lakeside Drive shall begin at the 100 block at the intersection of First Street.
   (B)   Odd-even numbers. Going north and south, even addresses will be on the western (or left side when oriented from the south) side of the street and odd addresses will be on the eastern side (or right side when oriented from the south) of the street. Going east and west, even numbers shall be on the north side (or left side when oriented from the west) of the street and odd numbers will be on the south side (or right side when oriented from the west).
   (C)   Spacing of numbers. Because there is no way of determining how many structures will eventually be built on vacant land or a large parcel within a block, any system which attempts to number structures consecutively does not provide the flexibility to accommodate change. A street number is assigned for each 50 feet of lot frontage.
   (D)   Corner lot. Corner lots are assigned two numbers since the unit could face either street. The first choice for an address shall be on the secondary street unless the front of the structure cannot face the secondary street because of lot configuration. This rule does not apply to nonresidential land uses. The owner or developer shall be assigned the street address that accommodates the front entrance of the structure at the time of permit application.
