Every owner, manager or agent of any multiple dwelling shall install in every dwelling unit, not less than one approved smoke detector on the ceiling, not less than eight inches from the ceiling and within 15 feet of all rooms used for sleeping purposes. Smoke detectors shall be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the corridor or area giving access to the rooms used for sleeping purposes. Where a common hallway is used, smoke detectors shall be spaced not more than 30 feet apart in such hallway, and no closer than 15 feet from cooking appliances.
