The Chief of the Fire Department, Engineer and firefighters shall be appointed by the City Council at its first regular meeting in May of each year, and they shall hold their offices for a period of one year, or until their successor shall be appointed and qualified, and they shall receive such compensation, if any, as the City Council shall determine; provided that, officers may be removed from office by a majority vote of the whole Council for official misconduct, neglect of duty or other adequate cause.
