§ 37.062  SICK LEAVE.
   (A)   Sick leave will be accrued by all full-time employees except temporary and seasonal employees as outlined below.
   (B)   Employees will accrue sick leave at the rate of 3.7 hours per pay period.
   (C)   Sick leave will accumulate but not be granted to any employee during his or her probationary period.
   (D)   There is no maximum accumulation for sick leave.
   (E)   Sick leave can be used in 0.25-hour increments.
   (F)   After an employee's sick leave has been exhausted, unused vacation may be used as sick leave. When absence due to illness exceeds the amount of paid leave earned and authorized, the pay of an employee will be discontinued until he or she returns to work.
   (G)   When an employee terminates his or her employment to begin retirement from the city per Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund and Medicare age requirements, the employee shall be paid an amount equal to the current value of ½ of his or her accumulated sick leave.
   (H)   An employee may take sick leave for illnesses and/or medical appointments of the employee and/or the employee's immediate family.
   (I)   For sick leave in excess of 2 consecutive days, a department head may require a signed statement from a physician or dentist verifying the employee's inability to perform his or her assigned duties because of the illness.
   (J)   (1)   To be eligible for paid sick leave, an employee will notify his or her supervisor no later than 1 hour after the beginning of the first work day for which sick leave is taken.
      (2)   Full-time police officers must notify the Chief of Police by phone or by page of the need to take sick leave no less than 4 hours prior to the beginning of their assigned shift. If the officer becomes ill during the 4 hours preceding his or her shift, he or she shall, by all reasonable means, contact the Chief by phone or by page as soon as possible. If an officer becomes ill during his or her shift, he or she will immediately notify the Chief by phone or by page. In any case, if the Chief has so designated the Sergeant to be in charge, he or she shall notify the Sergeant by phone or by page. Either the Chief or the Sergeant, whichever applies, will then be responsible for either covering the shift himself or herself or arranging/assigning other officer(s) to cover the shift.
   (K)   Permanent part-time employees are entitled to earn sick leave at the same rate as vacation pay and paid holidays.
