(a) Sick leave can be used for personal illness and serious illness in the immediate family. It can be used in the event of a communicable disease which endangers the health of others. Sick leave covers medical treatment and check-up office visits and home care. Sick leave in excess of three days must be verified by a physician's certificate.

(b) Accrual of 1.25 days per month with pay shall be allowable annually as sick leave to each full-time employee. The leave can be accumulated up to fifteen days per year.

(c) An employee shall have the right and option to convert up to thirty days of accumulated sick leave to one-half regular pay, provided that not more than thirty days may be converted in any calendar year and provided further that no conversion may be made unless at least ninety days sick leave have accumulated at the time of conversion.

(d) Any employee of the City who is otherwise eligible for retirement, except for the fact that such employee has not reached his or her retirement date shall, for the purposes of early retirement only, be entitled to convert all unused accumulated sick leave to regular paid days, which such converted days shall be credited and applied in determining compliance with all retirement plans presently offered by the City or hereafter adopted. At the time an employee elects to convert unused accumulated sick leave, as herein stated, such employee shall not accumulate any additional sick leave, vacation days and holiday pay benefits which would have accrued subsequent to the election to convert.
