§ 92.05 KNOX BOXES.
   (A)   Definitions. For purposes of this section, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
      “KNOX BOX.” A secure rapid entry system that is designed to be used by emergency personnel in the event of an emergency to gain entry into a structure by using the enclosed owner provided key(s). This box is usually mounted on the exterior of the building in a location that is specified by the local Fire Inspector/Fire Chief. All boxes shall be UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certified and approved by the Versailles Fire Chief.
      “SUBSTANTIAL RENOVATION.” Any improvement that costs greater than $25,000.
   (B)   The following structures shall be equipped with a Knox Box that fits the standards established by the Versailles Fire Chief before a certificate of occupancy is granted for initial occupancy or after substantial renovation:
      (1)   Commercial buildings;
      (2)   Industrial buildings;
      (3)   Any building that is equipped with automatic fire protection system;
      (4)   Any building that contains an elevator;
      (5)   Multi-family residential units that have restricted access through locked doors and have a common corridor for access to the living units.
   (C)   Existing commercial, industrial and multi-family residential facilities are encouraged to install a Knox Box that fits the standards established by the Versailles Fire Chief. Such structures that have two or more false alarms within a 12-month period will be required to install a Knox Box that fits the standards established by the Versailles Fire Chief.
   (D)   All Knox Boxes shall contain labeled keys, easily identified in the field to provide access into the property and/or building, and to any locked areas within the building as the Versailles Fire Chief may direct. Unless otherwise approved by the Versailles Fire Chief, Knox Boxes shall be located no further than ten (10) feet from the main entrance and no more than six (6) feet higher than the entry door threshold. Installation shall occur to comply with manufacturer's instruction.
