Following the certification of a petition of initiative, Council shall proceed to consider it at its next regular meeting and shall take final action thereon within thirty days. Provisions may be made for public hearings. If Council rejects the proposed ordinance, or passes it in a form different than set forth in the petition, the committee of the petitioners may require by stating in writing to Council within 14 days of Council's rejection of the ordinance or passage of the ordinance in a different form than set forth in the petition, that it be submitted to a vote of the electors, either in its original or amended form.
