(a) Each full-time employee shall be entitled to paid sick leave of four and six-tenths hours for each eighty hours of service. Employees may use sick leave upon approval of the responsible administrative officer of the Village for absence due to personal illness, pregnancy, injury, exposure to contagious disease which could be communicated to other employees, and to illness, injury or death in the employee’s immediate family. Three days shall be allowed for a death in the immediate family.
(b) Unused sick leave shall be cumulative. If more than sixty days are accumulated, one additional personal day per year shall be allowed for so long as the accumulated total of sick days exceeds sixty.
(c) When sick leave is used, it shall be deducted from the employee’s credit on the basis of one hour for every hour of absence from previously scheduled work. The previously accumulated sick leave of an employee who has been separated from the Village, shall be placed to his credit upon his re-employment in the Village, provided that such re-employment takes place within ten years of the date on which the employee was last terminated from the Village. The Mayor shall require an employee to furnish a satisfactory written, signed statement to justify the use of sick leave.
(d) If medical attention is required and three or more consecutive days of sick leave are used, a certificate from a licensed physician stating the nature of the illness shall be required to justify the use of sick leave. Falsification of either a written, signed statement or a physician’s certificate shall be grounds for disciplinary action including, but not limited to dismissal. (Ord. 93-3. Passed 4-12-93.)
(e) Sick leave upon termination of employment shall be as follows:
(1) No sick leave may be granted to a Village employee upon or after his or her retirement or termination of employment.
(2) Employees with ten years or more of service, who terminate employment but are not immediately eligible for retirement benefits based on their services as Village employees, shall be paid one-fourth of the accumulated sick leave, up to thirty days, upon termination of employment.
(3) Employees with ten years or more of service who retire and are immediately eligible for retirement benefits based on their service as Village employees, shall be paid accumulated sick leave in two equal installments, one paid in the year of retirement and one paid in the following year. Accumulated sick leave to be paid such retiring employees shall be as follows:
A. One-fourth of the accumulated sick leave up to thirty days; plus
B. One additional day of sick leave for each completed year of service with the Village, up to a maximum of thirty additional days. No such additional days shall be awarded for partial years of service. Years of service shall be computed from date of hiring to anniversary date.
(Ord. 05-008. Passed 5-16-05.)
(f) No part-time employee shall be entitled to accumulate sick leave.
