Anyone appointed to the office of Chief of the Fire Department or member of the Fire Department may reside outside the corporate limits of the city at the time of his appointment. Within 30 days after appointment and qualification and while serving as Chief or member of the Fire Department, anyone so serving shall reside within the city or within 1-1/2 miles of the corporate limits.
