Anyone appointed to the office of Chief of Police or policeman may reside outside the corporate limits of the city at the time of his appointment. Within 30 days after appointment and qualification and while serving as Chief of Police or policeman, anyone so serving shall reside within the city or within 1-1/2 miles of the corporate limits.
