6-2-10: DISPOSITION OF UNCLAIMED, VICIOUS OR INFECTED DOGS:
It is the duty of any police officer or other designated official, to keep all dogs so impounded for a period of twenty four (24) hours. If at the expiration of six (6) days from the date of notice to the owner of the date of posting of such notice, such dog shall not have been redeemed, it may be destroyed or sold for a sum of money sufficient to discharge the cost and charges incurred by the municipality for impounding and keeping the dog, together with the license fee (if applicable) for the current year if unpaid. Any police officer or other designated official has authority to submit terminally ill, injured or unfit dog, after a reasonable search has been made for the owner, to a licensed veterinarian to determine whether the dog can recover. If not, he may authorize euthanasia of the dog; provided, that no dog which appears to be suffering from rabies nor any dog of fierce, dangerous or vicious propensities shall be released from the pound but shall be destroyed. The buyer of any dog under the provisions of this section shall become the owner of the dog free from any claimer title of the original owner or harborer. (Ord. 2000-05, 7-24-2000)
