6-2-8: IMPOUNDING:
It is the duty of every police officer or other designated official to apprehend any dog found running at large, untethered or unlicensed contrary to the provisions of this chapter, or any dog which has attacked or bitten any person or other animal and to impound such dog in an animal shelter or other suitable place; provided, that if any fierce, dangerous or vicious dog found running at large cannot be safely taken up and impounded, such dog may be slain by any police officer or other designated official. Any police officer or other designated official, upon receiving any dog, shall make a complete registry, entering the breed, color, and sex of such dog and whether wearing a license tag. If licensed, the police officer or other designated official shall enter the name and address of the owner and the number of the license tag. Licensed dogs shall be separated from unlicensed dogs. If the owner is known or may be determined, the police officer or other designated official may issue to the owner or persons responsible a notice of offense or violation and fine. Such notice shall not be issued for any offense or violation, unless the offense or violation is committed in the presence of the police officer or other designated official, or a citizen has signed a complaint against the dog and/or owner.
