(a) Any firearm or dangerous ordnance which has been lost or abandoned, and is in the custody of the Division of Police, shall be disposed of as follows:
(1) The Division of Police shall make a reasonable effort to locate the person entitled to possession of the lost or abandoned firearm or dangerous ordnance and to notify him when and where it may be claimed. In the absence of evidence of the identity of the person entitled to possession, it shall be deemed sufficient notice to advertise once in a newspaper of general circulation in the county, briefly describing the nature of the property in custody and inviting persons to view and establish the right of possession. No firearm or dangerous ordnance shall be returned to a claimant except upon the presentation of proper proof of ownership to the Division of Police.
(2) If the lost or abandoned firearm or dangerous ordnance is not claimed by the person entitled to custody within thirty days of the date of publication of notice, it shall be disposed of in the manner set forth in Section 549.13
