6-1-3-2: BATTALION CHIEF:
   A.   Office Created: There is hereby created the office of battalion chief of the fire department, which officer shall be appointed by the village manager from recommendations from the fire chief. If a battalion chief shall, at a later date, no longer be battalion chief of the fire department, he shall automatically revert to and continue his permanent rank held at the time of his/her appointment and such person shall not lose his/her permanent rank by virtue of such appointment.
The battalion chief shall report to the deputy chief of the fire department and serve under his/her direction. The battalion chief shall have both staff and line officer responsibilities. As a line officer, duties shall include responding to all alarms of fire and assumption of command in the position of fire ground commander and have total authority over the fire department operations until relieved by a senior officer.
   B.   Duties: A battalion chief of the fire department shall:
      1.   Execute general and special assignments in the planning, administration, coordination, direction, and review of departmental operations and activities.
      2.   Serve as a member of the department's management team providing advice and assistance to the fire chief; assist in setting department goals and in evaluating the extent and nature of their accomplishment.
      3.   Represent the department in relationships with other governmental officials and members of the public and conduct special assignments at the direction of senior officers.
      4.   Perform related work and hours as specified by the senior officers.
      5.   The staff responsibilities of the battalion chief shall be assigned by the deputy chief of the fire department and shall change from time to time as designated by the fire chief. (Ord. 2005-24, 6-2-2005)
