Unprotected water wells and their distribution systems may be a public health hazard, and may act as direct conduits for surface materials to pollute or contaminate the groundwater. Unprotected distribution systems shall be upgraded to a protected condition. Unprotected water wells shall either be rehabilitated to a protected condition as required by 567 IAC 49, or plugged, as required in 567 IAC 39.
