1731.13 AWNINGS AND CANOPIES.
   (a)   Defined. A collapsible awning as regulated by this article means any roof-like structure attached to a building and projecting over a street, alley or sidewalk, so constructed and erected as to permit its being moved to a position flat against the building. A fixed awning as regulated by this article means any roof-like structure other than a marquee or portecochere, attahced to a building in an immovable position and projecting over a sidewalk a distance not greater than sixty-three inches. A canopy as regulated by this article means any roof-like structure other than a marquee or portecochere attached to a building in an immovable position over an entrance thereto and projecting over a sidewalk a distance not less than sixty-three inches.
   (b)   Construction. Awnings and canopies shall be constructed in accordance with current good practice, provided the construction is considered safe by and meets the approval of the Building Inspector.
   (c)   Erection. An awning shall be supported entirely from the building. A canopy shall be supported entirely from the building or by means of posts, columns or other members which do not project over the sidewalk. The manner of attachment to the building and the sizes and types of supporting members, bolts and screws shall be subject to approval by the Building Inspector. No awning or canopy will be erected until a permit for same has been approved by Council.
   (d)   Width. A fixed awning shall not exceed twenty feet in width. A canopy shall not exceed eight feet in width.
   (e)   Projection over Sidewalk. No awning or canopy shall project over a sidewalk beyond a point twelve inches inside the curb line.
   (f)   Height above Sidewalk. The minimum distance between the lowest portion of an awning or canopy and the surface of the sidewalk shall be as follows:
 
For collapsible awnings
7 1/2 feet
For fixed awnings
8 feet
For canopies
9 feet
   (g)   Advertising. No advertising shall be placed on any awning or canopy; except, that the name of the owner and words describing the general character of the business may be painted or otherwise permanently placed in a space not exceeding eight inches in height on the front and side portions thereof.
