(A) There is hereby created and established a fire department, consisting of a chief of the department and such other officers appointed by the fire chief with the approval of the mayor and the city council. The fire chief shall be recommended by the volunteer firemen and approved by the mayor and city council of the city of Spring Valley. Members of the Spring Valley fire department shall be accepted by the volunteer firemen currently comprising the department, with the approval of the mayor and city council, and subject to the bylaws established by the Spring Valley, Illinois, volunteer fire department.
In the event that the city of Spring Valley hires any full time employees to serve as members of the Spring Valley fire department in any capacity, the full time employees shall be appointed to their position by the provisions applicable to the appointment of policemen and subject to the appointment process established by the board of fire and police commissioners of the city of Spring Valley, as per the provisions of the Illinois municipal code. (B) The position of fire chief emeritus is created. The position of fire chief emeritus shall be filled by appointment by the mayor, with the advice and consent of the city council. The fire chief emeritus shall serve at the pleasure of the mayor. (Ord. 1482, 3-28-2011)
