3-1-5: FIRE MARSHAL QUALIFICATIONS:
The Fire Marshal shall have knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices of fire loss prevention management, applicable Federal, State and local codes, Spring Valley ordinances and regulations. The Fire Marshal shall also have knowledge of the mechanical, chemical, and related characteristics for a wide variety of flammable and explosive materials and objects. The Fire Marshal shall also have the following job related qualifications.
   (A)   Plan, organize, and participate in comprehensive fire prevention and loss management programs.
   (B)   Develop, revise and assure compliance with fire loss management policies and procedures.
   (C)   Maintain accurate and thorough records, files and reference materials.
   (D)   Read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
   (E)   Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with various City departments, citizens and professional contacts.
   (F)   Supervise and train new personnel for the Fire Marshal position.
   (G)   The Fire Marshal shall possess any combination of equivalent education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities including, but not limited to:
      1.   Education: An Associate's Degree or equivalent in fire science or closely related field is strongly recommended, but not required. In lieu of an Associate's Degree or equivalent in fire science, the Fire Marshal shall have sufficient professional experience in fire science through employment or volunteer activities.
      2.   Experience: Five (5) years' experience involving suppression and prevention activities and the inspection of structures for conformance to fire safety standards and systems, including supervisory experience, and building trade experience and affiliations.
      3.   Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
         (a)   Licenses: Possession of a valid Illinois driver's license.
         (b)   Certificates: Certification as a State Fire Prevention Officer. (Ord. 1705, 11-20-2017)
