§ 34.23 POLICE PATROL OFFICERS.
   (A)   Generally.
      (1)   Probationary appointments.
         (a)   With the exception of a pro-tem appointment as hereinafter provided, each new appointment to any position on the Police Department shall be considered probationary.
         (b)   The probationary period shall terminate one year from the date of any such appointment. During the probationary period, the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Village Board may discharge any probationary appointee for any reason at any time.
         (c)   After one year from the appointment, the Mayor, with the advice and consent of the Village Board, may discharge any such appointee for cause, at any time upon giving the appointee two weeks notice in writing of any such discharge.
      (2)   Pro-tem police officers. With the advice and consent of the Village Board, the Mayor may appoint any duly qualified person as a pro-tem police officer or Chief of Police for the purpose of filling a vacancy on an interim basis until the vacancy can be filled by a probationary appointment. Appointment(s) hereunder shall be for a period of 30 calendar days and may be renewed for a like period by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Village Board.
      (3)   Residency. Any probationary or pro-tem appointee shall not be required to be, at the time of his or her appointment, an elector or resident of the village; however, if the appointee should move at any time during the employment period, the appointee must move within the village limits.
      (4)   Bond. Each member of the Police Department, before entering upon his or her duties shall execute a bond to the village in the penal sum of $500, conditioned for the faithful performance of his or her duties and the payment of all moneys that may be received by him or her.

   (B)   Duties of patrol officers.
      (1)   The police patrol officer shall devote his or her entire time to the performance of the duties of his or her office, and is hereby charged with the preservation of the peace, order and safety of the village, and with the duty of protecting the rights of persons and property, and of enforcing all laws and also all orders of the Village Board.
      (2)   Each patrol officer shall take notice of all nuisances, obstructions and defects on the highways or other public places, and shall cause the same to be abated or removed, or immediate notice thereof given to the proper officer whose duty it may be to take action in relation thereto.
      (3)   When requested by the Mayor, either in person or by deputy, each patrolman shall attend all meetings of the Village Board, execute all its orders and close the Board Chamber upon the adjournment of that body. He or she shall also execute all warrants or other legal process required to be executed by him or her under any ordinance of the village or laws of the state.

   (C)   Salary. The Chief of Police and the patrol officers shall receive such compensation as may be provided by the ordinances of the village or by resolution of the Village Board.

   (D)   Appointment of patrol officers. A sufficient number of patrol officers shall be appointed by the Mayor, by and with the advice and consent of the Village Board.
