Article 7 of the Illinois Pension Code (ILCS Ch. 40, Act 5, §§ 7-101 et seq.) provides that a municipality may elect to participate in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund by the adoption of a resolution or ordinance of its governing body, participation to begin on the first day of January following receipt by the Board of Trustees of the Fund of official notice of the election by the municipality.
