(A) The Chief of Police shall be appointed by the Village President by and with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees, to serve a term of one year, unless otherwise extended by contract, but in no event longer than the term of the current Village President. Removal from office shall be in like manner in accordance with applicable state law and contractual provisions.
(B) The Deputy Chiefs shall be appointed by the Chief of Police. The Deputy Chief positions shall be exempt ranks immediately below that of Chief. Deputy Chiefs may be appointed from any rank of sworn, full-time officers of the South Elgin Police Department, but must have at least five years of full-time service as a police officer in the Department. Deputy Chiefs shall serve at the discretion of the Chief of Police and, if removed from the position, shall revert to the rank held immediately prior to appointment to the Deputy Chief position.
