8-7-2: DEFINITIONS:
For the purposes of this chapter, the following words and phrases shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them:
BACKFLOW: The flow of any water, foreign liquids, gases or other substances back into the distribution pipes of the potable water system.
BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE: A device which prevents backflow into a potable water system. All devices used for backflow prevention must meet the standards of the Illinois plumbing code and the Illinois environmental protection agency.
CONTAMINATION: An impairment of the quality of the water by entrance of any substance to a degree which could create a health hazard.
CROSS CONNECTION: Any physical connection or arrangement of the potable water system and the lawn sprinkling system whereby there may be a flow from one system into the other.
LAWN SPRINKLING SYSTEM: Any irrigation system of lawn, shrubbery and other vegetation from any water source, whether or not potable. Such system includes, without limitation, the water supply piping, valves and sprinkler heads or other irrigation outlets. Lawn sprinkling system does not include an irrigation system used primarily for agricultural purposes.
PLUMBER: Any licensed person authorized to perform plumbing as defined in the Illinois plumbing license law, but does not include retired plumbers as defined in the Illinois plumbing license law.
POTABLE WATER: Water which meets the requirements of 35 Illinois administrative code 604 for drinking, culinary and domestic purposes.
POTABLE WATER SYSTEM: All mains, pipes and structures through which potable water is obtained and distributed to the persons for use, including wells, and well structures, reservoirs, storage tanks and appurtenances, collectively or severally, actually used or intended for use for the purpose of furnishing potable water for drinking or general domestic use.
WATER SUPPLY CONNECTION: The opening, including all fittings and appurtenances, at the potable water system through which water is supplied to the lawn sprinkling system. (Ord. 99-572, 4-13-1999)
