Unless otherwise expressly stated, the following terms shall, for the purpose of this Code, have the meanings indicated in this Section. Words used in the present tense include the future; the singular number includes the plural and the plural the singular. Where terms are not defined in this Section, they shall have their ordinarily accepted meanings or such as the context may imply.
APARTMENT: One or more rooms arranged for the use of one or more individuals living together as a single housekeeping unit with cooking, living, sanitary and sleeping facilities.
APPROVED: As to materials and types of construction, refers to approval by the Building Official as the result of investigation and tests conducted by him, or by reason of accepted principles or tests by national authorities, technical or scientific organizations.
APPROVED AGENCY: An established and recognized agency regularly engaged in conducting tests or furnishing inspection services when such agency has been approved by the Building Official.
BUILDING OFFICIAL: The officer or other designated authority charged with the administration and enforcement of this Code, or his duly authorized representative.
DEAD LOAD: The weight of all permanent construction, including walls, floors, roofs, partitions, stairways and of fixed service equipment.
FELT: A fabric saturated with bitumen weighing up to forty five (45) pounds per one hundred eight (108) square feet used as an underlayment or sheeting paper. Not commonly accepted as flashing.
FIRE RESISTANCE RATING: The time in hours that the material or construction will withstand the standard fire exposure as determined by a fire test made in conformity with the "Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials". See NBFU-Building Code-55.
MASONRY UNIT:
Hollow Masonry Unit: A masonry unit whose net cross- sectional area in any plane parallel to the bearing surface is less than seventy five percent (75%) of its gross cross- sectional area measured in the same plane.
Solid Masonry Unit: A masonry unit whose net cross- sectional area in every plane parallel to the bearing surface is seventy five percent (75%) or more of its gross cross- sectional area measured in the same plane.
Veneer: A facing of brick, stone, concrete, tile, metal or similar material attached to a wall for the purpose of providing ornamentation, protection or insulation but not counted as adding strength to the wall.
WALLS:
Bearing Wall: A wall which supports any vertical load in addition to its own weight.
Cavity Wall: A wall built of masonry units or of plain concrete, or a combination of these materials, so arranged as to provide an air space within the wall, and in which the inner and other wythes of the wall are tied together with metal ties.
Faced Wall: A wall in which the masonry facing and the backing are of different materials and are so bonded as to exert a common reaction under load.
Foundation Wall: A wall below the floor nearest grade serving as a support for a wall, pier, column or other structural part of a building.
Nonbearing Wall: A wall which supports no vertical load other than its own weight. (Ord. 0-71-12, 3-11-71)
