7-3-3: STANDARDS:
   A.   Wood mailbox support posts shall be not larger than six inches by six inches (6" x 6"). All other mailbox support posts must be a break away design, approved by the village building officer.
      1.   All mailboxes and/or mailbox support posts must display address identification numerals.
         a.   Street address numerals must be displayed on a single side of the mailbox and/or on the mailbox support post.
         b.   Fire departments serving South Barrington recommend that all numerals be Arabic numerals, minimum four inches (4") in height and minimum one-half inch (1/2") in width; numerals should be contrasting colors to the surface of the mail box structure to which they are attached, reflective coatings are ideal for night time identification.
         c.   Vinyl, self-adhesive numerals are acceptable.
      2.   All numerals in the address display must be maintained in a clearly legible condition.
      3.   Mailbox and its support must be maintained in good condition, able to withstand weather conditions and snow plowing activity. The village or its snow plowing contractors shall not be responsible to replace or repair any mailbox in poor condition that is damaged during normal snow plowing activities.
   B.   Homeowners shall not plant trees in the village right of way without a permit and approval of the village.
   C.   All shrubs and bushes shall be set back a minimum distance of fifteen feet (15') from the edge of pavement unless used as a screen around utility boxes and mailboxes and is kept at a height of three feet (3') or less.
   D.   All stones placed at the edge of pavement must be flush with the edge of pavement.
   E.   All driveway abutments, ribbons, riprap and other enhancements shall be set level with the driveway pavement, edge of roadway and existing grades when placed in the right of way.
   F.   1.   Rigid markers including metal pipes, conduit, stakes, posts, and the like, shall not be allowed within any right of way; provided, however, that flexible markers shall be allowed as seasonal markers for snowplowing along the edge of pavement when installed after November 15 and removed before April 30.
      2.   Flexible markers may be used to protect newly planted grass at edge of road pavement.
   G.   No landscaping, landscape features or structures that restrict clear visibility, measured along the edge of pavement, to less than one hundred feet (100') shall be allowed within any right of way.
   H.   A three foot (3') wide strip of hard surface made of the same material as the edging, such as asphalt or concrete, may be placed between the edge of the road pavement and the bricks or pavers. The village will not be responsible for any damage done to bricks or pavers within three feet (3') of the road pavement due to snowplowing and road maintenance.
   I.   All existing masonry mailboxes and monuments located in the village right of way are in violation of existing village ordinance. Owners must remove the non-compliant structures and restore the village right of way to grass or provide the village with the following:
      1.   An indemnification agreement to be provided by the village, holding the village, its employees, officers, agents and elected officials harmless and indemnified from any and all property damage, personal injury, costs, including attorney fees, resulting directly or indirectly from the construction and/or maintenance of any brick, masonry or concrete mailbox structures located in any village right of way. The agreement shall be recorded in the office of the Cook County recorder of deeds. At the time of delivery of the indemnification agreement, the property owner shall submit a fee of seventy five dollars ($75.00) to the village. This fee shall cover all administrative and recording costs related to the indemnification agreement and shall be in addition to any other fees associated with the permit application processes of the village; and
      2.   The property owner served by the mailbox and or driveway monument shall secure and maintain a liability insurance policy in the amount of one million dollars ($1,000,000.00) naming the Village of South Barrington as additional insured.
   J.   Any existing masonry mailboxes and/or driveway monument structures in the village right of way that are destroyed for any reason or removed by the owner cannot be rebuilt in the village right-of-way. (Ord. 2016-1144, 11-10-2016; amd. Ord. 2020-1222, 2-13-2020; Ord. 2020-1249, 10-8-2020)
