A. The provisions of section 10-2.1-15 of the Act are hereby modified to provide that all promotions to the rank of Sergeant will be made by the Village President with the advice and consent of the Village Board of Trustees. Full- time police officers who are non-probationary and have completed three (3) years of continuous service with the South Barrington Police Department are eligible to be evaluated for promotion to the rank of Sergeant as set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the Board of Police Commissioners of the Village of South Barrington. The Village President and Village Board of Trustees may establish educational requirements for promotion to the rank of Sergeant; however officers hired to a full time position in the Village's Police Department on or before March 1, 2009, are not required to meet an educational requirement for promotion that is more stringent than that in effect on March 1, 2009. (Ord. 2018-1178, 4-24-2018)
B. All promotional appointments will be considered as probationary appointments. Accordingly, members so assigned will be subject to an eighteen (18) month probationary period. No less than thirty (30) days before the end of said probationary period, the Chief of Police will recommend to the Village President either the retention of the promotional appointment or reassignment of the appointee to his or her previous position. The Village President, with the advice and consent of the Village Board of Trustees, will make the final decision with respect to the retention or reassignment of the appointee, which decision will be final and not subject to review by the Board of Police Commissioners.
C. The position/rank of "Senior Sergeant" and "Deputy Chief" will be an exempt rank and assignments to the position/rank of "Senior Sergeant" or "Deputy Chief" will not be subject to the provisions of this section. Assignments to the position/rank of "Senior Sergeant" or "Deputy Chief" will be made by the Village President, from the officers holding the rank of Sergeant, with the advice and consent of the Village Board of Trustees.
