(A) It is the policy of the city that all sewers shall be installed in a good workmanlike manner so that the sewer system of the city will require a minimum of maintenance.
(B) The bottom quadrant of all sewer pipes constructed shall be fully and uniformly supported. Where the floor of the trench is not sufficiently stable or firm to prevent vertical or lateral movement of the pipe after installation, a supplementary foundation shall be provided.
(1) Proper support around the pipe bells is particularly important and excavation of the bells should be as small as possible.
(2) Pipe trenches should be of a minimum width, as the distance between the pipe wall and trench wall increases, the load on the pipe increases.
(3) Thorough tamping of the backfill is important, for it prevents lateral displacement of the pipe and assures uniform load distribution.
