(A) Classified Service. It shall be the function of the Fire Department and the duty of each sworn firefighter to prevent and extinguish fires and to act as a firefighter/paramedic (emergency medical technician) in incidents of medical emergency occurring in the Village and to sites of fire to which the department will respond in rendering auto/mutual aid; to enforce all ordinances relating to fire hazards within the Village; and to undertake such other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
(B) Non-Classified Service. Civilians may be hired from time to time by the Village President to undertake work in accordance with orders given by the Chief of the Fire Department, including but not limited to secretarial tasks with the approval and consent of the Village President and Board of Trustees.
(C) Duty to Appear as Witness. Each member of the Fire Department shall appear as a witness whenever necessary in the prosecution of a violation of an ordinance or of any state or federal law. No member shall retain any witness fee for the service as witness in any action or suit to which the Village is a party. Any fees for such service shall be forwarded to the Chief of the Fire Department who shall deposit them with the Village Treasurer.
(D) Each member of the Fire Department shall appear for and honor civil subpoenas for oral depositions in any civil action where testimony of the member is sought. For those oral depositions in cases where the Village is not a party, the depositions of members of the Fire Department shall be conducted at the Village Hall during the deponent's regularly scheduled shift, unless an order of court provides otherwise. The member shall forward any fees for such service to the Chief of the Fire Department who shall deposit them with the Village Treasurer.
(E) Upon receipt of a subpoena, the member shall immediately forward a copy of the subpoena to the Chief of the Fire Department who shall forward a copy to the Corporation Counsel's office. The Chief of the Fire Department or the Corporation Counsel shall promptly notify the party who caused the issuance of the subpoena about the existence of this section.
