When any vehicle is parked in any space adjacent to which a parking meter is located in accordance with the provisions of this chapter, the operator of such vehicle shall, upon entering the parking space, immediately deposit or cause to be deposited a one cent (1¢) coin, five cent (5¢) coin or ten cent (10¢) coin of the United States in such parking meter and put such meter in operation; failure to do so shall constitute a violation of this chapter and shall subject such person to the penalty prescribed herein.
Upon the deposit of such correct coin and placing such meter in operation, the parking space may be lawfully occupied by such vehicle during the period of parking time in accordance with the time limitations as designated on such parking meter. If the vehicle remains parked in the paring space beyond the parking time limit fixed for such parking space, the parking meter shall indicate, by its dial and pointer, such illegal parking and, in that event, the vehicle shall be considered as parked overtime or beyond the period of legal parking time in any such part of a street or avenue where the meter is located, and shall be in violation of this chapter and punishable as set forth in Section 353.99.
