(A) The Chief of Police and each member of the police force, in execution of process, shall have the same powers that Sheriffs have in the discharge of like duties, and fees shall be the same as those of the Sheriff for like services. The police of the town shall have power to do whatever may be necessary to preserve the good order and peace of the town and secure the inhabitants from personal violence and their property from loss or injury. The Chief of Police and each member of the police force, before entering upon the discharge of the duties of his or her office, shall be required to take and subscribe the oath prescribed for public officers and an oath that they will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of their office according to law, which oath shall be filed in the police files for inspection by any official so authorized to inspect the papers.
(B) The police shall patrol the town at reasonable intervals, give their attention to the enforcement of ordinances, perform all duties imposed upon them, as is provided under the general law of the state, arrest all offenders, suppress all disturbances, and, upon the occasion of fire and when requested by the Fire Chief, be present, preserve order and protect property, give proper information to strangers, and act in a civil manner to all with whom they have official business.
