The several members of the police department are hereby severally authorized to arrest with or without process, or on view, any person or persons who shall break the peace or to be found violating any provisions of this code or other ordinances of the village or any criminal law of the state, and to take such person or persons before the appropriate judicial officer of the circuit court, or if necessary detain such person or persons in custody overnight or Sunday in the village jail, or any other safe place, until they can be brought before the proper magistrate or justice for trial.
