2-17-6: APPOINTMENT, REMOVAL OF REGULAR MEMBERS:
   (A)   All members of the police department, except the chief of police and auxiliary police, shall be appointed and removed by the board of fire and police commissioners as provided by state law and the rules and regulations of said board. (1965 Code, Sec. 12.04; amd. Ord. 2506, 8-16-2004)
   (B)   If the chief of police is appointed from among the members of the police department, he shall continue during and after his term of office as chief of the police department to hold the rank in the police department held by him immediately prior to his appointment as chief of police unless and until removed from said prior rank by the fire and police commissioners in the manner provided by law. When a chief of police also holds another rank in the police department, the number of officers of said rank heretofore authorized shall be and remain increased by one from the time of said chief's appointment until he ceases to be chief and thereafter until and only until, by reason of a vacancy or separation of some officer from the service, the number of officers serving in that rank again becomes reduced to said number heretofore authorized.
