1513.01 RESIDENTIAL SMOKE DETECTOR REQUIREMENTS.
   (a)    Smoke detectors shall be installed in each single family dwelling hereinafter constructed. There shall be a minimum of one smoke detector for each dwelling, with at least one smoke detector located adjacent to the main sleeping area of the dwelling, and at least one smoke detector located on every level of the dwelling, including the basement, but excluding any attics or crawlspaces. The smoke detectors shall be hard wired to 110 volt power with a battery back-up. The builder of the dwelling shall be held responsible for compliance with this requirement.
   (b)    Smoke detectors shall be installed in every existing single family dwelling. There shall be a minimum of one smoke detector for each dwelling, with at least one smoke detector located adjacent to the main sleeping area of the dwelling, and at least one smoke detector located on every level of the dwelling. The occupant of the dwelling shall be responsible for compliance with this requirement and shall have a time period of one (1) year from the effective date to comply.
   (c)    Smoke detectors shall be installed in each dwelling unit of all existing and hereinafter constructed multiple family dwellings, attached one-family, two family, and three family dwellings. There shall be a minimum of one smoke detector for each dwelling unit in the main sleeping area and at least one smoke detector for each level of the dwelling if more than one level exists, including the basement, but excluding any attics or crawlspaces. Smoke detectors shall also be installed in all locker/storage areas and laundry rooms of multiple family dwellings.
   (d)    All smoke detectors must be approved by Underwriter's Laboratory.
   (e)    All smoke detectors must be installed to comply with the manufacturer's recommendations and the recommendations of the approving or listing agency.
   (f)   Batteries in all smoke detectors containing batteries shall be changed at least annually, with the date of installation clearly marked on the battery.
   (g)    The owner or agent of any dwelling shall be responsible for installing special notification devices as required due to hearing impairment or other physical limitation or impairment.
